Frame and Backplane Structure

Scout’s frame is feature that remained unchanged. The design provides for efficient hydrodynamic drag and allows for vehicle to submerge and surface effectively.

Enclosures

Scout uses two watertight cylindrical enclosures to hold all of the systems circuit card assemblies. This year, the enclosures have been expanded and are created to be more reliable in the pressurized underwater environment. The cylinders and the lids that accompany the cylinders, are made from acrylic glass. The material was machined on a lathe which allowed for us to create more accurate circular cross sections as were designed in our CAD models.

Backplane

The backplane is a waterproof enclosure that eliminates the need for bulky cables. It provides communication between the two cylinders. The backplane was designed to be less intrusive to the vehicle. All of the cables that enter and exit the cylinders are connected to the backplane. This allows for us to easily access ports that control the vehicle. Connectors on the backplane are created by Subconn and are designed to be waterproof.
